PRIVACY STATEMENT
Student records are considered “personally identifiable information.” This student information is protected by:
• The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
• The Ohio Revised Code (3313.321)
• South-Western City Schools Board Policy #8330, #8330.01, and #8350.
No student information, other than directory information, should be disclosed without prior written parental consent. Directory information is defined as: a student’s name, address, date of birth, extracurricular participation, achievement awards or honors earned, weight and height if a member of an athletic team, photograph, parent names, and previous school or school district. Parents have the right to decline the release of directory information annually by requesting in writing to the Superintendent that schools refrain from releasing such information.
Only employees having a “legitimate educational interest” are permitted access to student information. Employees must refrain from sharing personally identifiable information of students with other employees who do not have a “legitimate educational interest,” and with non-employees without prior written parent consent.
The District’s Acceptable Use Policy (AUP--South-Western City Schools Board Policy #7540.03) directs users to protect student information on the Network.
This notice reminds all South Western City Schools employees to follow FERPA, the Ohio Revised Code, and Board Policy guidelines concerning the sharing and release of student information.
